Four feel-good countryside breaks

Sometimes we just need to get away from it all. And the peace and rejuvenation of the countryside – away from the bustle of the city – can be just the remedy. Northern Spain for forests, bakeries and hidden treasures

Northern Spain

Fly into Bilbao and head for the Basque mountains, where you’ll find the medieval fortified town of Segura. Take leisurely walks on the Camino, head to markets for freshly baked bread, goat’s cheese and cider. Spend a day in nearby Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park for eagles and soaring vistas of peaks and the beech forest below.

Game of Thrones fan? Well, we have a treat for you. You’ll find Daenerys Targaryen’s Dragonstone at San Juan de Gaztelugatxe – an ancient settlement 20 miles from Bilbao. Climb the 241 steps, ring the church bell and bask in the impeccable views. When you’re done head back to the Restaurante Eneperi for white wine and local delicacies.
