Five family holidays with a difference

Five family holidays with a difference

The perfect holiday means different things to different families. From relaxing by the pool or kayaking on the Med to volunteering or horse riding through stunning scenery – we’ve picked out five family-friendly breaks with a twist.

So whether your family loves back-to-back activities or trips around historic castles – we’ve got something for you!

Croatia for an active break

Active holidays certainly keep kids entertained and Croatia is packed full of exciting, family-friendly adventures. Throughout the region you can try white water rafting, sea kayaking and canoeing.

The Dalmatian coast is not only outstandingly beautiful but will keep high-energy children happy for days. You can book an entire activity break, such as a kayaking holiday – where you will roam from island to island over a week. Or simply book activities when you arrive at your hotel or apartment. There are a plethora of companies offering a range of beachside activities.

Fly direct from Heathrow to Pula, Zagreb or Split in the summer.

Greece for a volunteering break

Volunteering can be fantastic for families with older children – it’s a chance to spend quality time together, learn about another culture or environmental projects and meet other people from all over the world.

In Greece there are a few turtle conservation programmes, helping the endangered population. Some activities include recording nesting activity and protecting hatchlings from predators as they journey to the sea for the first time.

As well as daily tasks there is always plenty of time to explore the surrounding area and visit archaeological sites. This is just one of the many family volunteering breaks available around Europe and the rest of the world.

Fly direct to Athens from Heathrow and take onward travel.

Nantes for a city break

Elephant rides, street art and cycling await you at Nantes, on the river Loire. Over the last decade the city has undertaken a transformation and there’s plenty to do to fill a week here.

Les Machines de L’ile Nantes have created a fantastical playground where a robotic elephant carries passengers on its back and a carousel inspired by 20,000 leagues under the sea by Jules Verne whizzes around.

There are also fascinating street art installations throughout the city linked together by a route marked with green paint. Spend an afternoon following the green-painted road and hop on and off the trams. If the heat becomes too much visit the Miroir d’Eau (water mirror) – a splash-park where 32 jets shoot up from a pool.

Why not spend half a day at the 15th-century Château de Ducs de Bretagne? A fairytale, moated castle in the city centre packed full of royal history.

Fly direct to Nantes from Heathrow.

Malta for a relaxing beach break

Malta’s laid back, easy going character means you’ll get some rest while the children are entertained by boat rides on the blue Med, swimming, snorkelling and more. The island is small and getting around doesn’t take long.

Golden Bay is an ideal family beach, with swathes of warm sand where you can paddle board and windsurf. Older children will get more out of St Peter’s Pool – a rocky bay great for swimming and jumping into the sea.

Fly direct to Malta from Heathrow.

America for a nature break

The great outdoors awaits in America – a haven for nature lovers no matter their age.

With older children take a road trip from California to Nevada where you’ll visit Yosemite, swim in natural hot springs, roller blade along the Pacific and see the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon

If you’re an animal-loving family, take a trip to northern Colorado where you can visit ranches and ride horses in the mountains under wide blue skies.

Any budding paleontologists in the family? Then head to Utah and follow the dinosaur trail. Walk among Jurassic skeletons at the Museum of Life and wander the unusual red rock scenery.

Fly direct to Denver, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles or Salt Lake City from Heathrow.
