Seven alternative city breaks for spring

Looking for a holiday that doesn’t break the bank? Then you’re in luck! We’ve put together a tempting list of six beautiful destinations that are great value and easy to reach. Pick your destination wisely and you could make big savings on summer breaks!

The Sunny Beach resort is a well-established low cost destination. Yet, much of Bulgaria is cheaper than many of its European counterparts. A third of Bulgaria's Black Sea coast is made up of gold, sandy beaches. Try Varna for history and roman baths and Nessebar – a charming coastal town. If you’re keen to take in some Bulgarian nature head to the Rila range full of hikes and interest.

A mid range meal will cost around £9.52 and you can expect to pay about £36 a night for a mid range hotel.

The ancient roman town of Poreč is a short drive from Pula airport – and far cheaper than other places on the sparkling Croatian coastline. Poreč is a popular tourist destination in summer and therefore, it’s busy. If you’re looking for a lively summer break then head here.

There’s a World Heritage–listed basilica, and many Gothic and baroque buildings. You can use Poreč as a base to explore the bucolic and pristine Istrian interior or venture along the coast for verdant inlets and fantastic seaside dining.

Mid range hotels here will be between £38 - £57 a night – depending on your location.

Budapest is quickly becoming a popular destination – and it’s clear why. However, just outside of the city lies Szentendre, the southern gateway to the Danube. This is a small art colony awash with museums, galleries and churches.

The Art Mills is an incredible gallery spread over three floors of an old mill. Many of Hungary’s towns and villages are inexpensive and a meal for two will cost about £21.39. If you head away from the capital the prices drop but the beauty is still as staggering.

Start your Estonian adventure in fairytale Tallinn, wandering the cobbled streets and pretty squares. After a few days, go beyond the city walls and you’ll find a treasure trove for nature lovers.

Lahemaa National Park is Estonia’s largest national park and here you’ll find unspoilt peninsulas and bays overlooking the ocean, plus pine tree scattered forests, lakes and rivers. Or if you have time to venture further, take a trip to Saaremaa – the country’s largest island. Fresh air, tiny villages, and a landscape dotted with windmills will greet you.

You can expect to pay around £21 per night for a mid range hotel in Estonia.

Many tourist use Bucharest as a leaping off point to travel Transylvania. However, the capital is worth a few nights, especially if you include a day trip or two. Here a three course meal for two will come in at around £18.44.

Cişmigiu Garden is a must-see, with shaded walkways, cafes, a large lake and paddle boats. The beautiful Romanian Athenaeum is the heart of classical Romanian music – great for an evening out or just to wander its exquisite interior.

When in Romania it will be hard to resist a trip to Dracula’s castle. A three hour drive will see you enjoying Brasov and Bran Castle, perched high over a valley with a gushing river below.

For sweeping Black Sea views drive to Constanta for the day. The restaurants boast inexpensive but delicious local food and the port is the gateway to Romania’s beach resorts.

Fly direct to Faro from Heathrow in the morning and you’ll be basking in the Algarve sun by lunch. This stretch of shimmering blue coastline is cheaper than others in Portugal. For a mid range hotel you’re looking at £34 for a double, a night.

With breathtaking cliffs, tempting seafood and sandy islands – there is much to enjoy in this alluring destination. For diving, entertainment and activities head to the beach, but if you’re after something a little more enchanting head to the inner Algarve. Castles, birdlife, historic villages and hillsides freckled with colourful flowers, as well as fabulous hiking trails make the interior of this region a delight to visit.
